Gardner McDonald celebrates 90th birthday
by Ethel Johnston
Richard
The home of Marlene and Murray McDonald was the scene of a happy occasion earlier in the winter, when family and relitives of Gardner McDonald gathered to celebrate his 90th birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. McDonald had been spending the winter in North Battleford. The part was a surprise for Mr. McDonald - he had been driven out to the farm by son and daughter-in-law, Reg and Julie, on the pretext of seeing Marlene and Murray's newly located mobile home. Accompanying them was niece Eva Rae.
Present also to enjoy the turkey supper in Mr. McDonald's honor were sons Russ and wife, Rose and Ken and wife, Lorna; grandchildren Velda Karp and husband, James and their son Elton, Rita Lamontange and husband, David - 16 persons in all.
The meal was climaxed with a birthday cake - which proved the gathering was, indeed, for "grandpa". A goft of a digital clock was presented to Mr. McDonald on behalf of the family. Art and Mable Huber, Marlene's parents, dropped in later to express congratulations. The evening was spent visiting and playing cards.
Gardner has been actively farming since he came to the Richard from Clandeboye (near Selkirk, Man.) in 1906. Last summer at the Richard Celebrate Saskatchewan Day, he received the Family Farm Heritage award for still farming what had been his father's land. He drives the tractor every summer, to do the summer fallowing and keeps up with a multitude of other chores - welding the post mall, fixing the fences, mending bins, and so on.
He and Mrs. McDonald were also honored on that day as representing "the past" on the Richard and District Recreation Board float. (Mrs. McDonald also having the honor of being chosen by the Douglas R.M. Council to receive the honor plaque of all the pioneer women of the community - the plaque to be hung in the R.M. office.]
Mr. McDonald's advice and opinions are still respected. He loves to have the family and friends drop in for a visit, a bite of lunch, or best of all - a game of cards! He spends hours reading - going through a book in short order. He has already read several of the large community history books.
Grannie and Grandpa McDonald are dearly loved by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were happy to choose the occasion of Grandpa's 90th birthday to express their devotion.

The death of Gardner Alexander McDonald, 95, of Unit 12 River Heights Lodge, North Battleford, Sask., retired farmer of the Richard, Sask. district, occurred April 29, 1986 in Battlefords Union Hospital. funeral service was held May 2 from Third Avenue United Church with Rev. Jack Carr officiating. Active pallbearers were Murray McDonald, James Carp, Wayne Milman, Harvey McDonald, David Lamontagne, Blair Combres. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Jess, Henry Combres, Ralph Potter, Lional Milman, Leslie Johnston. Survived by his wife Gladys Rose; four sons: Russell (Rose) and Kenneth (Lorna), both of Richard, Reginald (Julliette), North Battleford, Archibald (Edna), Branchford, Ontario.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his parents Archibald Phail and Louisa Tabitha (nee James); two sisters: Louisa Taylor and Pearl Milman; two brothers: Stephen and Francis. The late Mr. McDonald was born in Clandeboye, Man. Gardner (Garnie) came to the Richard district in 1906 and later filed for a homestead on S.E. 28-43-12 W3rd. This was where he and his wife Gladys (nee Budd) first made their home; later moving into his parental home on N.E. 20-43-12 W3rd when his parents moved to North Battleford in 1917. Gladys and Garnie, married for more than 70 years, retired to River Heights Lodge in the fall of 1984. He loved visitors, a game of Kaiser, was an avid reader and his love for hunting and nature, in later years was limited to rides in the country and going "to see the geese". He was a charter member of the Sask. Wheat Pool; a member of the Forresters, a recipient of the Pioneer Appreciation Award from the province in 1976 and received the Family Heritage Award in 1980. Awards and honors alone do not measure the mark of a man on the lives of others. he leaves behind those who will always be grateful for the gifts of his honesty, his vision, wisdom and impeccable sense of fairness. He will always be remembered for the indomitable spirit that kept him riding the tractor and mending fences until his 89th year. he was one of the last of the generation which settled this country and brought it into cultivation. Internment was in the City Cemetery. Sallows & McDonald Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
