Mr. And Mrs. Eli Budd celebrate 60th wedding

Mr. and Mrs. Eli Budd, of Wadena, were at home to the many friends Monday afternoon, November 25, who called to offer congratulations and best wishes on the occasion of their diamond wedding anniversary. Members of the Untied Church Women were in charge of refreshments served.

Mr. and Mrs. Budd were married in Glasston, North Dakota, on November 25, 1903. Mrs. Budd was the former Lorena Sarah Watt, Rev. Alfred E. Coomb, of the Methodist Church, preformed the marriage ceremony and attendants were Pearl McArton, and Albert Budd, a brother of the groom. Mr. Albert Budd is now of Richard, Sask. and was able to attend the anniversary celebration in Wadena Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Budd lived in North Dakota and later Ontario until 1912 when they took up a homestead at Oyen, Alberta. In 1921 they brought their family to Wadena and settled on a farm north of town. Ten years later they returned to a home in Ontario where they lived until 1949 when they moved to Endeavour, Saskatchewan. With their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Budd, they came from Endeavour to Wadena two years ago and have purchased a home here.

Both their sons, Cecil and Keith, the latter of Weldon, Sask., were present at the anniversary gathering. A foster daughter, Mrs. Irene Parish, lives in Toronto. There are three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Budd were pleased to receive telegrams of congratulations from her Majesty Queen Elizabeth; Prime Minister Pearson; Hon. John Diefenbaker, Leader of the Opposition; Mr. Reynold Rapp, MP for Humbolt-Melfort-Tisdale constituency; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Pearson, Sudbury; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Tolen, Waterways, Alberta; and phone calls, cards and messages from Smith Falls, Ontario; Waterways, Alberta; North Battleford, Prince Albert, Richard, Saskatoon, Gravelbourg, Toronto, Guelph, Regina, Ottawa, Canoe, B.C.; Aurora, Ontario; Wrightsville, Pennsylvania; Cartwright, Manitoba; Weldon and Weyburn, Sask.

Flowers were received from Miss Violet Budd of Saskatoon, and Mr. and Mrs. Harold McKendry , of Guelph, Ontario; The Legion Axillary, the WA and the blu-j's axillary to the Red Cross, all of Endeavour; The United Church Women of Wadena; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Malcom, of Watson; and Mrs. Gay Klappueth and daughter Tammy of Edmonton.

The honored couple received several gifts. the community presented a blanket and a purse of money; Mr. Budd's sisters and brother presented a twin sweater set; the Westport Homemakers a bon-bon dish; and their son Keith and nephew, Mort Harvey of Kinistino a black diamond and tie and cuff link matching set.

On behalf of the gathering Mrs. Francis Weber pinned a blue carnation corsage to compliment the blue ensemble on Mrs. Budd, and a white carnation boutonniere on Mr. Budd.

Refreshments were served from a lace-covered table centered with a three-tiered wedding cake decorated by Mrs. Cecil Budd with brilliants to simulate diamonds. Fresh flowers completed the table arrangements. Mr. and Mrs. Budd cut the cake and Mr. Budd's brother and sister, Mr. Albert Budd and Mrs Gladys McDonald, both of Richard served the guests.

A number of speakers were heard during the afternoon and three favorite hymns of the couple were sung with Mrs. O. E. Fraleigh at the piano. Mr. C.M. Hall was master of ceremonies, Mrs. A. Carlson spoke for the Westport Homemakers Club; Mrs G.F. Gillespie for the United Church; Clifford Lee a former farm neighbor; Mayor R. E. Forbes, representing the town; Mrs. F. Best for the Curling Club Mrs. Arton Faust for the early residents of the district; and members of the family, Mrs McDonald, Albert Budd, Cecil and Keith Budd.

In their earlier days both Mr. and Mrs. Budd were active community workers. Mr. Budd was particularly well known for his skill in horseback riding and did hippodrome riding in his day. He was also skilled in step dancing but arthritis in his knees persuaded him to give up both those cherished accomplishments. He was also active in the Oddfellows Lodge at one time. Mrs. Budd, however is still a member of a number of organizations in Wadena, the United Church Women, Legion Axillary, Westport Homemakers, and she helps with the Red Cross, from whom she received a Badge of Service for long years of work.
