Budd: Albert & Olive

Albert Budd was born in Lindsay, Ontario on August 10, 1884. He came to this area from St. Thomas, North Dakota in 1906. The promise of his own land lured him west. He homesteaded on NE 20-45-11 W 3rd, making him north of Speers and west of Aticane. At the Albert arrived, neither of these places were thought of, supplies were brought from Feilding or Maymont.

He started out with four green steers which were purchased in North Dakota. They had never had a rope on them, so had to be gentled and trained to work. He worked the land with the oxen for two years, then he bought horses. Horses were faster, stronger and steadier. He never did operate a tractor.

In 1907 he went back east and married Olive Nolan, in Winnipeg, on July 7, 1907. They had only oxen for work and transportation. Their home was made of hand- hewn logs roofed with poles and sod. They raised a family of four , Eva, Russell, Irena and Lenora. Times were hard, but with courage and perseverance they did well. There were times when they had no cash and had to work for someone to get it to purchase essentials.

Mrs. Budd died in 1953. Albert lived on alone. While he was still farming he started to spend his winters in North Battleford and the summers on the farm. As years went by he stayed full time in North Battleford. Daughter (Eva Rae) came and lived in the apartment next to him. This arrangement worked very well. For his 95th , his family arranged a party for him. He enjoyed it greatly. He did a lot of reminiscing.

He took sick shortly after that and had to be hospitalized. He passed away Dec. 31, 1980, in the Regional Care Centre. He got his main wish to not be in a nursing home for a long period.

Albert Budd

Albert Budd was born in Lindsay, Ontario, on August 10, 1884. During his childhood the family moved to North Dakota. From there Albert came to the Wanganui district of Saskatchewan in 1906, at the age of 22 to claim a homestead.

He bought four green steers in North Dakota for $25.00 each. the steers had never had a rope on them, so the first task was to gentle them so they could be trained to pull the plough and be ridden. Albert was one of the first settlers in the area.

He went back east to get his girl, and on July 7, 1907 was married to Olive Lenora Nolan. While Albert was clearing the first ten acres of land and building a log cabin, he and his bride lived in a tent. The house was completed in 1908.

Albert and Olive lived in their log cabin homestead many years, bringing five children into the world, working hard to make ends meet. Albert worked on farms at times to make a few dollars so the family could buy essentials. Albert and Olive raised four children. Eva, Russel, Lenora and Irene. Keith, their second son died when he was 1 year old.

The family stayed on the farm until 1928. During these years both Albert and Olive worked on threshing crews. Olive as a cook and Albert hauling, while continuing to farm their two quarters of land.

In 1928 they decided to quit farming, and they built a hotel in Aticane. Due to the depression things went hard for them and in 1935 Albert and Olive decided to go their separate ways. Albert remained in Aticane until 1937, when he returned to the farm, where he continued farming until the late 50's. Then he sold the farm, but continued to live there until 1970.

At age ninety he moved to North Battleford to an apartment.

His oldest daughter Eva Rae, lives at Trail, B.C. Russel married Yvonne Combres from Richard. They made their home in British Columbia. Russel is now deceased. Lenora Ferguson lives at Weyburn, Sask. Irene married Matt Hautala on October 31, 1960 in Idaho. They made their home in Golden, British Columbia.

Albert Budd has eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
